Ph.D. and Integrated Ph.D. programs in physics

IMSc invites applications for its PhD and Integrated PhD programmes in Theoretical Physics starting in August 2025. Details of the process, including the eligibility criteria and the opening of the online application portal would be announced tentatively by end February 2025. Candidates intending to apply for either of the programmes are requested to visit this page regularly for updates.

Applicants for the Ph.D. program should have completed a masters' degree in physics by the time they join the program.

Applicants for the Integrated Ph.D. program should have completed a bachelor's degree in physics or a B.E./B.Tech degree by the time they join the program.

Admission to both these programs will be opened to students who have qualified for the Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) of the UGC-CSIR NET examination or Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) or the Joint Entrance Screening Test (JEST) [see details below].

ADMISSIONS 2025

Application Portal Timelines (tentative):

  • First Round: Open from March 10 – March 30, 2025.
  • Second Round: Open from April 14 – April 30, 2025.

Note: Receipt of a complete application before the deadline does not guarantee an interview spot. Based on the applications we receive, we will shortlist candidates for the in-person interview; shortlist to be announced soon after last date of applications.

Selection interviews (tentative):

  • Interviews for admission to the physics Ph.D. and Integrated Ph.D. programs at IMSc, to be held in-person.
  • First Round: Week starting April 7, 2025, for candidates applying through GATE 2025 and previous NET results.
  • Second Round: Week starting May 19, 2025, for candidates applying through JEST 2025 and NET (March 2, 2025).

The eligibility criteria will be announced before opening of the application portal for each round of interviews.
